The painting was inspired by the poem “Let America be America Again” and the back drop of the Black Lives Matter uprising during the summer of 2020 and the back drop of the repressive Trump Administration. Close observers of the painting will see Sanford nod to local artists in his inclusion of graffiti stickers in the painting. Notably “Krai-Z” for Sanford’s long time friend and peer, the poster artist Michael Anderson who died that summer. This painting of a once happy couple who lived across the street from the painter for several years before the painting was painted. Sanford recalls these times as the “salad days” of Hamilton Heights, in large part because of all the great salads he enjoyed at neighbor Liza Scheonfein and Mark Jannots home. But when Scheonfein and Jannot split up, around the time of this painting it set off a rash as divorces on Sanford’s block. The picture depicts Sanford, probably a frequent patron, ordering a drink at The Honeywell bar in his West Harlem neighborhood. Sanford rarely attended, mainly because he is bad at poker and found it painful to fork over cash to the other fathers from the neighborhood, most of whom actually had jobs and thought of losing just a small price to pay to avoid their wives and children for an evening. But on occasion, Sanford would justify losing a few 50 dollar buy-ins to reconnect with his ex-neighbor. This picture seems to depict a critical moment in one such game. Jason Yarn appears to be going all, probably hoping for a straight in with just the river card remaining to be revealed. Sanfords hold a suited 2 and 10, the infamous “Doyle Brunson” hand and looking for the 10 on the river for his full house. Jannot, Chad Jones and Joe Jordan have folded and watch. John DiRe and Michale Moyer are also still in. What will Sanford do? The artist, needing subject matter and sensing an opportunity, used Gitler generosity to underwrite a whopper eating contest at a Harlem Burger King. Jon Heller, Esteban Ocampo Geraldi, Gitler and Sanford participated are are depicted in the picture. Boy Kong was among the observers of this disgusting display of gluttony and reposts that Sanford won the contest, eating 6 (650 calorie) whopper sandwiches in 30 minutes. This good natured chap sells Sanford malt liquor, diet soda and paper towels and was willing to allow the artist to paint him. It is believed that Sanford’s favored local watering hole was Uptown Bourbon, a small whisky and cheap beer oriented bar in his West Harlem neighborhood. Apparently he liked the rough around the edges character of its regulars and several of his subjects have frequented the bar. He was also able to make an arrangement with the bars ownership for an “unlimited tab” in exchange for art. A painting that Sanford painted of a Narragansett Lager and a bottle of Evan Williams bourbon hangs in the bar. Donald can help one with odd jobs, masonry work and can be relied on for a joint. The car is filled with friends and neighbors. The most recognizable of which is Neil Patrick Harris, whose children were, at that time, in the same school as Sanford’s little ones. After they closed the bookstore to get back to the less profitable, but more popular, business of giving away free beer, they were left with some left over inventory. To solve this problem, and the problem of employment for friend of the gallery and local loiterer, Garry, Heller set up a bookstand outside the gallery. Roni Hendrix again plays bartender and Sanford’s long suffering wife, Alex Sanford looks on. The ideas was that each of the participants would paint Mie Iwatsuki, a frequent model and muse for celebrity painter Alex Katz. Sanford was thrilled and decided to try to use this as an opportunity to meet an paint the far better known artist, no doubt in hopes that might be a boon to the floundering painter’s career. Through Mie he arranged a meeting at Katz’s Soho loft/studio. It can only be assumed that the meeting didn’t go to well. The resulting painting, based on Otto Dix’s picture “Self Portrait with Muse” (1923) was by Sanfords estimation quite accurate to the aging Katz’s likeness. However Katz hated it and is rumored to have asked Laurence to have it removed from the exhibition. Unfortunately for Katz, the painting however had already be purchased by a loyal Sanford supporter, and not wanting to alienate the collector, Lawrence elected to hang the picture in the darkest corner in the back of the gallery, and at least temporarily remove the image from the website. Katz did discover the painting at the opening of the exhibition and stormed out. Sanford had been a fan of Schachter for many year, primarily because of Kenny’s art dealing and writing activities, and more recently his powerful instagram presence. More recently Kenny has become extremely successful in the realm of digital art, and like most of Sanford’s portrait subjects has stopped returning his text messages. Anyway, Sanford proposed a trade in which Sanford would paint Schachter, resulting in this picture. Sanford recalls being extremely pleased with the painting. However he is not confident that Schachter liked it as much as he did. Either way, Schachter held up his end of the deal. This canvas from late 2019 was the last time as Anderson would die just over 6 months later on the 27th of July, 2020. Sanford first reported being scared of Anderson when they first met at the 2003 Scope Art Fair in Miami Florida, where both artists had solo booths. But after reconnecting in New York City the next year, Anderson became good friends and often exhibited together. This Painting, set in Anderson’s 3rd iteration of The Harlem Collage shop, on 107th and Broadway, shows the “Mad Collector” showing off his comprehensive collection of NYC graffiti stickers. Anderson had collected stickers since 1992 and claimed to have 40,000 or so. The picture also nods to several of Andersons influences, such as his friend jazz man Ornette Coleman, pitcher Doc Ellis, as well as various collage artists. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/55821640e4b073972e903502/1614614867562-HDDLQHXC6AM3PD51OW22/Busby%2Bin%2BStudio%2B2018.jpg Art - "Busby in his Studio" 2018 In 2018 Sanford was invited to participate in a 3 person exhibition of himself, Christian Schumann, and James Busby at Neumann Wolfson Art on New York’s Upper East Side. With his usual poor instincts, Sanford wanted to collaborate with the tow other painters. Schumann wasn’t interested in the idea, but Busby was. So it came to pass that Sanford traveled down to Chapin, South Carolina and spent a few days hanging around with Busby and his family. The two painters ate a good deal of BBQ, drank some beers, rode ATVs around Busby’s property, and Sanford did some drawings that resulted in this pretty magnificent painting of Busby in his studio. The two also collaborated on a couple works which were not as successful. After the exhibition the Busby portrait painting had not sold, which bummed Sanford out. On top of that disappointment, Sanford’s relationship with the gallery seems to have been strained. The artist is not really sure why this is, but he suspects the cold shoulder is related to some internal family matters that he doesn’t have much to do with. Both painters made paintings of each other. Ness’s picture was exhibited in her first solo exhibition at the 1969 gallery and was sold. Not wanting to risk being called a plagiarist, Sanford reached out to the younger artist, who at the time was studying at the NY Art Academy on Franklin Street. Sanford showed up with many beers, and Esteban was extremely gracious. At the time Sanford was the type of painter who sometimes needed an art assistant (in that he had more money than he needed at the time) and pretty soon Heidkamp was filling that role. Within a few years Heidkamp was far more successful as an artist than Sanford, and around that time Sanford made this painting of his pal Danny. Sanford believes that he has not actually seen Heidkamp in person since making this painting and is not sure whether this is because the more career save younger painter hates the portrait so much, or considers Sanford too professionally toxic to mingle with? Oil on Panel. 60 x 80 inches. Sanford, the arch moralist, painted this picture as a part of body of work he called “Bad Religion” for a 2007 exhibition at Galleri Faurschou in Copenhagen, Denmark. In the picture Sanford assigned each of the seven dead sins a celebrity avatar using characters who, at the time of painting were all alive and well and part of the cultural conversation. The then president, George W. Bush represented pride. While Bush survives today we is now remembered as a somewhat benign and lovable old man/Sunday painter. At the time Sanford painted him he represented the worst over reaches of American Exceptionalism and a national hubris. Kenneth Lay represents Greed,. The now late, and at the time recently disgraced, Enron executive at the time embodied the epitome of corporate greed. George Michael, probably because of a recent(ish) bathroom sex scandal, coupled with more recent (at the time) legal troubles stemming from “anonymous public sex” in Hampstead Park. Envy seems to be represented by Lindsey Lohan. At the time the young actress seemed to be constantly embroiled in controversy, but its unclear if she was really the envious one, or is the artist was merely envious of the actress. Comic actor Chris Farley represents Gluttony presumably for his weight, appetite not only for food and drink but for cocaine, which turned out to be fatal. Bill O’Reilly, the now cancelled over a plethora of sexual harassment lawsuits and various #metoo complaints, at the time seemed to represent wrath, undoubtedly for his hateful and partisan rhetoric as a political commentator on Fox News. Model Anna Nicole Smith, who at the time stared in an early reality television series, represents Sloth. Presumably Sanford judged her worth of this honor not only for how she came across on “The Anna Nicole Show” but also for her famed history of gold digging. While none of Sanford’s sinners seem particularly relevant today, that the artist would argue is a testament to the fickle nature of fame. Gallery Poulsen, where Sanford was exhibiting, was in the same neighborhood V1 and the club outside which the innocent occurred. Sanford made a painting, gathering key details form the press coverage of the even as well as a brief email exchange with Shepard Fairey. This is a painting that Brett and I had been talking about doing for almost a decade and during the Pandemic year it finally happened. It’s of Brett and a few of his friends, several of them are pretty recognizable types. The idea came from the original Ocean’s 11 poster of the guys around a pool table, although my version ends up suggesting a Fra Angelica style, pre perspectival space. In the picture Sanford depicts Marc Wehby as he is typically seen, on the telephone as Susie looks on. In the background we see work by Nina Chanel Abney, one of several artists that the couple discovered. Christian, a long time friend of Sanford’s may have introduced the artist to his long suffering wife, and it is suspected that artist felt he owed his old friend a favor. He may also have been working under the assumption that there was an obscene amount of Rich Ruggiero’s incredible Czech inspired beers to be gained. Whatever the case, Sanford depicts John Ratzenberger (a Bridgeport native) as the fictional postman, Cliff Clavin, from 1980s sitcom Cheers! as the Patron Saint of beers. The painting heavily references Bridgeport related iconography. Sanford considers this small still life painting of a fifth of Evan Williams bourbon and a tall boy Narragansett Lager (gifts from proprietor Andrew Castelli to the artist on the event of his 2017 “99 Bottles of Beer” exhibition at Gitler & Gallery) possibly the most fruitful use of his talents to date. He was able to exchange it for a seemingly inexhaustible tab at The Uptown Bourbon Bar in West Harlem. Sanford’s preferred watering hole and fountain of artistic inspiration. Not only has the painter wasted away countless hours at the bar, but several of his best paintings, which are usually of goings ons at bars, are set in this humble, whiskey soaked, dive bar. It pictures Cortney’s five Upper East Side favorites: Jackie Onassis, Vera Wang, John D. Rockafeller, Martin Scorsese, and Chris “Biggie Smalls” Wallace (Biggie is a bit of a stretch, but the artist was on board with Ms. Bond’s vision).
